The improvement of the welcome conditions in the airports: a pressing need to develop tourism in Morocco
In line with the implementation of the provisions planned within the Framework Agreement for the development of the tourist sector by the year 2010, the improvement of the welcome conditions in Morocco 's airports has been set up as a crucial building-site for upgrading the tourists' welcome.
Firstly, an approach has been adopted; it consists in drawing up a diagnosis of the welcome conditions in the major airports of Marrakech/Casablanca/Agadir, a diagnosis which has permitted to come up with 3 axes which constitute the cornerstone of the tourist welcome : comfort and welcome/treatment of the passenger/equipments and infrastructures .
Since 2003, a certain number of concrete actions have seen the light of day in the major airports of the Kingdom, encompassing thus redevelopments, renovations, extensions and the construction of new terminals, as is the case for Casablanca and Marrakech.
The development program of the airport capacity is part of the top priority of the Airports National Office and it aims at the national objective of 10 million tourists by the year 2010.
It is intended to accompany the policy adopted by the Government and to meet the requirements of the international norms, in terms of security and quality.
The ONDA as well as the Tourism Department and the major actors concerned are aware of the fact that the airports should continually be managed in a rigorous and professional manner and they should take into account the need of the populations concerned.
The ONDA intends to bring the welcome capacity of the airport network from 12 to 18 million passengers annually.
The most important project intends to reinforce the "hub" structure of Mohamed V airport and to consolidate its vocation as a cross-roads for air traffic at the regional level.
The expansions of terminals are scheduled in Tangier, Dakhla, Essaouira, Errachidia and El Hoceima, while a reinforcement program of the aeronautics surfaces will concern the airports of Marrakech,Tangier and Al Hoceima where the widening of the landing strips and the planes parkings must also allow the jumbo aircrafts to be received.
Such expansions will be accompanied by the establishment of new information systems designed to assure an integrated management of airport resources, in order to improve their productivity and efficiency.
The first three airports of the country should benefit from these equipments, and that is all within the framework of the "introduction" of the second operator of the Handling.
