Tourism and sustainable development
The global Code of Ethics for Tourism constitutes a reference framework for the rational and sustainable development of international tourism, at the dawn of the new millennium. In fact, its article 3 specifies that tourism is a factor of sustainable tourism. Thus, tourism should safeguard environment in terms of a healthy and economic growth, a continuous and sustainable one, which intends to satisfy equitably the needs and expectations of the present and future generations.
One should encourage the different modes of tourist development, which may save the scarce and precious natural resources, notably water and energy, and avoid, as far as possible, producing waste.
Concerning these questions, Tourism Department as well as the professional actors concerned are called upon to play an innovative role. Indeed, some professionals have already implemented environmental charters as regards installations and equipments.
At the present moment, Tourism Department, the Ministry of Town and City Planning, of Water and Environment as well as the National Federation of Hotel Industry are leading an awareness campaign among the professionals of hotel industry. Such a campaign intends to develop and to promote a sustainable tourism in Morocco
