The International Conference on Tourism -Tetouan 2008-

Placed under the High Patronage of His Majesty the King, the 8 th International Conference on Tourism was held in Tetouan in the presence of Mr Abbas El Fassi, the Prime Minister, several representatives of the government, professionals of the sector and guests from Morocco and abroad.

On that occasion, His Majesty the King Mohamed VI sent an important message to the participants in the Conference.

In this message read by the Prime Minister, the sovereign has expressed his optimism as regards the dynamics which is now underway and the strategic objectives set in the 2010 Vision, declaring that despite a sluggish international environment which is not always favourable for the major tourist emitting countries, Morocco witnessed, in 2007, the arrival of 7,4 million tourists and recorded more than 17 million overnight stays.

His Majesty has also called on the operators and State's partners to respect the contractual deadlines and quality commitments agreed upon (by all the stakeholders), while urging the different parties concerned to maintain the dynamics underway and to support the structuring projects of the 2010 Vision as well as the building-sites of domestic tourism.

This 8 th edition of the International Conference on Tourism entitled “the Quality of the Tourism Sector”, has allowed the participants to assess the advancement state concerning the implementation of the 2010 Vision, to bring together the public and private actors and to consolidate the mobilization around the strategic objectives of the sector.

All of the projects related to the success of the 2010 Vision have been tackled: the Azur Plan, Azur Expansion projects or the Biladi Plan intended for domestic tourism, without necessarily forgetting to mention responsible tourism which respects the environment and its civilizational values.

During this International Conference on Tourism much emphasis has been put on the Training axis of human resources through the signature of a program contract between the government and the professionals of hotel industry. This program contract (HR hospitality contract) is dedicated to the training of human resources. It aims at the training of 60.000 new graduates in hotel trades by the year 2012.

In addition, within the framework of the program “ Morocco for a responsible tourism”, some trophies have been awarded during the International Conference on Tourism to Moroccan and foreign operators. Such trophies have been granted to the participants according to three themes:

•  Nature and environment trophy, which awards the initiatives contributing to the preservation of the environment, natural resources and biodiversity.

•  The trophy relating to solidarity and equity tourism, which aims to award a prize to all the initiatives that introduce a concrete solidarity relationship between the tourist and local populations; it also proposes a tourist offer which is developed and managed by local communities.

•  Culture and heritage trophy, intended for initiatives contributing to the preservation of heritage and socio-cultural authenticity of local communities.
