«  Tourism and environment national day  »:
To make professionals more aware of the need
to preserve the environment

14-07-2008

On July 10, 2008 , the Department of Tourism and Handicraft as well as the National Federation of Hotel Industry (FNIH) organised the first tourism and environment national day in Casablanca under the theme of “ For a sustainable and ecologically responsible tourism ”.

The Swiss Ambassador to Morocco took part in that meeting, together with academics, professionals of the tourism sector and the representatives of several ministerial departments.

On that occasion, Mr Mohammed Boussaid, the Minister of Tourism and Handicraft has underlined that the environmental issue at stake is both national and international, because it is one the challenges to be taken up as regards the climatic change.

In the speech delivered at the opening of the day, Mr Boussaid has also stressed the need to develop a clean tourism and to contribute to the preservation of nature which constitutes a “fund of tourism trade” and the deterioration of which may reduce the tourist flow.

Moreover, the tourism and environment national day has been an opportunity to go over the national approach which is aimed at considering the means to improve the protection of environment and to strengthen sustainable tourism, on the basis of the actions undertaken by the National Committee of responsible tourism established in 2006.

Being part of an approach intended to increase the professionals' awareness of such an issue, this day has been also the opportunity to:

•  reiterate the commitment and involvement of all the stakeholders as regards the preservation of the environment;

propose concrete measures of accompaniment, supervision, training and follow-up which should progressively lead to the implementation of an environmental management integrated into the tourism sector in general and hospitality in particular.
