Moroccan Tourism is in a position to overcome the global economic crisis
28-05-2009

The tourism sector in Morocco is in a position to overcome the impact of the global economic crisis thanks to the pursuit of anticipatory and innovative efforts”, said Mr Mohamed Boussaid, Minister of Tourism and Handicraft on Thursday, May 21.

In a talk given at the Council of Government concerning “the impact of the economic crisis on tourism in Morocco ” Mr Boussaid highlighted the satisfactory results recorded by this sector last April: it is a performance which shows the efficiency of the measures adopted by the Department in charge of tourism.

Last April, the tourist arrivals indicated a 24% rise, while the overnight stays showed a marked recovery estimated at 6%, explained the Minister, specifying that a sharp increase in different Moroccan destinations is the most striking feature.

These positive results have helped alleviate the effects of the global economic crisis, and between last January and April, Morocco showed a 10% increase at the level of tourist arrivals, against a slight drop in the number of overnight stays (during the same period) estimated at 3%, he added.

Mr Boussaid pointed out that the Ministry has developed, in partnership with the professionals of the sector an anticipatory anti-crisis plan, CAP 2009” . This initiative has made it possible to define some complementary and exceptional measures which aim to anticipate the impact of the crisis on Moroccan tourism.

According to the Minister, despite the dynamics initiated by this plan and the positive results generated by the latter, Moroccan officials of the sector are fully aware of the seriousness of the current crisis and they are keeping an eye on its evolution.

According to the Minister, the tourist activity has succeeded in tackling this current situation, compared with other countries, and “what matters most to Morocco now is the need to preserve its parts of the market through the implementation of a series of measures dealing with the tourist promotion and air transport”. Such measures, he said, will be implemented in the short term with a budget estimated at 300 million dirhams.
