Partnership Agreement between Morocco and the Spanish Agency for the International Cooperation (AECI) to promote the handicraft sector in the North

A partnership agreement was concluded on May, 23,2006 in Tetouan between the Ministry of Tourism, Handicraft and Social Economy, on the one hand, for the promotion of socio economic development of the Provinces of the North (APDN) and the Spanish Agency for the International Cooperation (AECI), On the other hand, for the promotion of the handicraft sector in Tangier-Tetouan and Taza-El Hoceima-Taounate regions.

The agreement is intended to carry out a regional development plan (PDRA) of this sector in the aforementioned regions through six axes : the analysis of the sector, the institutional support, the training and improvement of the craftsmen, the research and development for the improvement of the product, the commercial promotion, and the pilot experiences. Lasting four years, the agreement plans to have available the necessary funds, that is to say 40 million DH for the promotion of the sector, including 35 million DH which will be allocated by the Spanish party. As regards the rest, it will be distributed between the APDN (3 million DH) and the Ministry (2 Million DH).

The agreement signed by Mr Adil Douiri, the Minister of Tourism, Handicraft and Social Economy, Mr Fouad Brini, the managing director of the APDN, and Mr Luis Planas Puchades, the Spanish Ambassador to Morocco, will be beneficial to the craftsmen working in the two regions, and more particularly in the sectors of furniture trade, decoration, clothing, jewellery and building trade.

A particular importance will be given to craftswomen in the rural area, and more particularly in the field of basket-making, traditional weaving and pottery.
