On Wednesday, January 17, 2007, His Majesty the King Mohammed VI opened the project work concerning the restoration and the illuminations of Fez 's historical great walls , with a total of 40, 2 million DH.

This project, which aims to safeguard these historical great walls and renovate them, will be financed within the framework of a partnership between Fez 's prefecture (34, 2 million DH) and the Regional Council of Fez-Boulemane (6 million DH).

The implementation of such a project, whose redevelopment will be spread over one year, sets itself the objective of improving the living conditions of the populations concerned and upgrading the urban and architectural scene of the town, in order to promote the tourist culture in this city.

At the same time, His Majesty the King made inquires about some strategic projects for development and about others which are in line with the Tourist Regional Development Program (PDRT).

Concerning the Regional Tourist Development Program (2006 / 2015), with a total of 2 billion 968,4 million DH, it will be financed by the public sector (945,7 million DH) and a projected private investment (2 billion 22,7 million DH). It has witnessed the participation of several actors, namely the Ministry of Tourism, Handicraft and Social Economy, the Ministry of the Interior, as well as the Moroccan National Tourism Office (ONMT), the Wilaya of Fez - Boulemane region, the Councils of the region, of the prefecture and of the City, the Regional Council of Tourism, the "Caisse de Dépot et de Gestion", the Agency for the dedensification and the renovation of Fez's Medina (Ader - Fez) and AL Omrane Management Holding.

This program tends to reinforce the welcome capacity of the hotel units, by creating two new tourist areas (Oued Fez and Ouislane), to renovate two pilot districts, Ain Azliten and Quaraouiyne, to strengthen the tourist circuits, to promote the Handicraft sector, to draw up a strategy concerning the promotion of Fez-destination, to put in place some priority air routes in accord with the world strategic markets, to improve the global environment of the city (security, cleanliness, transportation) and to reinforce the human and financial resources of Fez's CRT.

Oued-Fez tourist management project was in line with the implementation of the Higher royal directives, on the occasion of the organization of the National Meetings on Tourism in Marrakech in January 2001, aiming to manage a new generation of tourist areas which meet the international norms.

The project, which requires a budget of 682 million DH (management and construction of golf courses) and stretches over an area of 171 hectares , should attract an investment amounting to 2 billion 582 million DH.

The realization of this tourist area will be carried out through an innovative management program, on a site highly symbolic and with a respect for the requirements of the sustainable development.

It will contribute to the achievement of the objectives decided on within the framework of "the 2015 Fez-Vision", and mainly 1.880.000 overnight stays at classified hotels, an average minimum length of stay (2,5days) and an occupancy rate of 58 pc.

As regards the strengthening of the tourist circuits in the Medina , with an amount of 10 million DH, it is aimed at developing and reinforcing the attraction of the most visited streets as well as at safeguarding the heritage.

Concerning the project relating to the renovation of Ain Azliten district, which requires a budget of 34 million DH, it aims to safeguard the heritage and reinforce the commercial and tourist influence of the district.

It consists of the restoration of the damaged façades, the improvement of the existing accesses, the reinforcement of the public lighting, the paving of the small streets and the restoration of the damaged architechtonic elements.

Regarding the improvement of the urban scene, having to do with Bin Lamdoun access, with a total of 6 million DH, it has come to complete the management work of the access, to contribute to the improvement of the urban scene and the strengthening of the attraction of spaces, in favour of the population and visitors.

The project of the renovation of the historical triangle of al Quaraouine-Moulay Driss - Sidi Ahmed Tijani, with a total of 24 million DH, is a strategic program which is in line with the efforts made by the local authorities, in order to restore the Medersa Errachidia, to consolidate and reface the fronts, to pave the streets and renovate the sequences.
