Tourist development of Al Hoceima Province : an investment of 4 billion DH for the creation of 25.000 additional jobs by the year 2015
On March 9, 2007, Mr Adil Douiri, the Minister of Tourism, Handicraft and Social Economy, presided over the launching ceremony of the Tourist Development Planning of Al Hoceima Province.
This program, which consists in implementing a development plan by the year 2015, with some concrete effects from 2009 onwards, revolves around four priority main lines :
The development of a new tourist seaside resort area, of a new-generation, at the level of "Cala Iris" site,
which about 84 km away from the town of Al Hoceima . This project, with an area of 339 hectares , will help to generate an accommodation capacity of 10.000 beds, including 6.000 hotel ones. It provides also for the construction of a series of entertainment facilities (golf course, marina, business space. etc). The global projected investment for the realization of this new area comes to more than 3 billion DH, and it will generate an important socio-economic impact by creating mainly 5. 000 direct and indirect jobs.
The overhaul of the existing tourist product, with a view to renovating gradually Mohammed V hotel, demolishing and reconstructing the Tourist Residences in Quemado and creating 2.000 hotel beds on the site of Souani (the former Club-Med). This project, which requires an investment of about 600 million DH, will contribute to the creation of about 1.000 direct jobs. It will be realized within the framework of a draft agreement, involving the Ministry of Finance and Privatization, the Tourism Department, the High Committee of Forestry and Fight against Desertification, the Agency for Promotion and Socio-Economic Development of the Prefectures and Provinces of the North and the CDG Development.
The development of a niche product on the Mediterranean coast (between Nador and Tangier via Al Hoceima). This project intends to develop Kayak activities by means of creating a reception center /MKT (Morocco Kayaking Tour) and three stopping places in the Province of Al Hoceima . This project, which is run by Morocco Kayaking Tour Company, will help to generate more than 150 direct jobs, with a capacity of about 52 beds and an investment of 6,5 million DH.
The enrichment of the scheduled seaside offer and the enhancement of natural and cultural assets of the rear country (Pays d'Accueil Touristique/PAT) by the year 2010. This PAT provides mainly for the setting up of a tourist reception house and 8 self-catering cottages as well as the development of two big circuits. It will help generate a hundred of direct jobs; and it will require an investment of more than 7 M DH within the framework of a convention involving the local Authorities and the representatives, the Tourism Department, the High Committee of Forestry and Fight against Desertification, the Agency for the Promotion and the Socio-Economic Development of the Prefectures and Provinces of the North.
To sum up, the whole of these tourist development projects will contribute actively to the revival of the tourist activity of the region, with an overall investment of around 4 billion DH. Thus, between 2007 and 2015, the tourist accommodation capacity will increase fivefold and it will go from 2000 to 10.000 hotel beds. Concerning the number of overnight stays, it will be multiplied by 50 and it will go from 36.000 overnight stays in 2007 to 1.800.000 overnight stays in 2015. As a conclusion, the number of generated jobs through this development program will reach 25.000, including more than 4.000 direct jobs.
