Morocco elected member of the Executive Council of the WTO
27-11-2007

On Monday, November 26, 2007 , Morocco was elected new member of the Executive Council of the World Tourism Organization (OMT), for a four-year term of office, a Council which holds its international conference from 23 to 29 of this month in Cartagena de Indias - Columbia.

On the other hand, considering its expertise in the field of studies and inquiries which would help to assess the contribution of tourism to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Morocco has been invited to be part of the sub-committee of statistics of the Tourism Satellite Account coming under the Executive Council.

The opening ceremony of the General Assembly of the WTO has been presided by Colombian President Alvaro Uribe and the General Secretary of the WTO, in the presence of about fifty Ministers, Heads of Delegations and about a thousand Delegates.

It has also been characterized by a message from Mr Ban Ki-Moon, the General Secretary of the United Nations, who has greeted the WTO, “the youngest institution of the UNO”, congratulating it on the choice of the Assembly's themes, more particularly on the existing links between tourism and climatic change.

Actually, the 17 th General Assembly of the Organization concentrates its discussions on the existing links between tourism and climatic change, the fight against poverty, the forecast and risk management as well as the issues related with security.

In addition, some sectorial debates have been conducted at the level of experts and technical committees centred around administrative and financial questions, tourist investment opportunities, the cooperation with the United Nations system as well as tourism ethics.

For that purpose, Mr Frangialli has emphasized the strategic importance of launching campaigns intended to increase the awareness of members of the WTO as well as tourists of the need to preserve environment.

He has added that the major objective of the WTO is to draw our attention to the impact of climatic change and to involve all the parties in the preservation of environment, without necessarily affecting development.
