Meeting in El Jadida on the big tourist projects scheduled
in the region
On Monday, September 22, Mr Mohamed Boussaid, the Minister of Tourism and Handicraft, held a meeting with the different administrative and economic sensibilities of the province and the local authorities, dedicated to the presentation of the big tourist projects scheduled in the region.
This meeting has been characterized by the presentation of three reports on the current status of the tourism sector in the province and its promotion means, the results of a study carried out within this framework as well as the status of the project of Mazagan's seaside resort which is in the process of being realized in the El Haouzia region.
Regarding the current status of the tourist activity in the region, it emerges from the first account that the number of tourists who visited El Jadida in 2007 has reached 73 467 for 136.228 overnight stays, while the local hotel capacity is, at present, estimated at 1 832 beds, including 1375 classified ones.
The second account presented during this meeting has been focused on the conclusions of a study relating to the sector development in the province.
This study is supposed to set the guidelines likely to promote the tourist activity, mainly through the diversification of the offer, the development of ecotourism as well as sports and recreational tourism, while adopting a three- axis strategy: “the reinforcement of tourist areas”, “the upgrading of the sectors connected with tourism” (transport, health, culture etc.) and the “development of rural areas”.
The third account has concerned the status of the first phase/period concerning the realization of the project of Mazagan's seaside resort, dealing with the construction of a 5 star hotel with a capacity of 1000 beds, four classified restaurants, residences with a capacity of 900 beds and a conference room.
On that occasion, the Minister of Tourism has expressed his conviction as regards the “promising” future of the tourist sector in the province of El Jadida , and he has noticed that the challenge for the forthcoming years consists in bringing the hotel capacity of the region to 5000 beds.
Within this framework, Mr Boussaid has pointed out that the levers for the sector promotion in the province will be the seaside resorts of “Mazagan” and “Sidi Abed”, putting much emphasis on the need to diversify the tourist product and to allow El Jadida to switch from transit tourism to residence tourism.
In line with all that has been said, the Minister has called for the establishment of a blueprint of tourism at the level of the province, which will make it possible to make the diagnosis of the problems posed and to find the appropriate solutions.
